Top 5 Cosmetic Treatments for a Smile Makeover

Cosmetic dental treatments for a new smileAre you looking to change your smile? It’s your defining feature, and the first thing people notice about you. You should never be afraid to show off your pearly whites. From small but impactful changes to a complete smile makeover, we can give you the smile you’ve always dreamed of at Shoreline Dental Studio. There are many options when determining how to improve your smile, and each smile makeover can be tailored to fit your goals. Here are just a few procedures that can transform your smile.

1. Teeth Whitening

Yellow teeth are the most common complaint from our patients. Common foods and drinks like coffee, tea, and berries can stain your teeth. Luckily, there are many effective teeth whitening options for you to choose from. We can supply at-home whitening kits that are custom fitted to your teeth. These are stronger than store-bought whitening kits, and cause less gum irritation.

We also preform in-office whitening treatments, like Zoom! Advanced Whitening. In-office treatments are perfect for instant results, and can whiten your enamel by 8 shades on average.

2. Invisalign Aligners

Invisalign clear aligners are the perfect option for perfect teeth. Who wants to be a brace-face past the age of 12? Invisalign aligners offer a discrete option for straightening your teeth. They are also a great option for making small changes to your teeth that traditional braces often can’t. If you’re plagued by misaligned teeth come in for a consultation.

3. Dental Crowns

Dental crowns can be used to cover damaged or discolored teeth. They are ideal for replacing a large filling, restoring a cracked tooth, or cover a discolored or oddly shaped tooth. Crowns take two appointments: the first to remove the compromised structure and take an impression, and the second is to adhere the crown.

4. Enamel Shaping

If you’re worried about a rough-edged tooth or slight overlap, enamel shaping (or re-contouring) can help. It can smooth rough edges and create a more uniform look. We do this by removing a very small amount of the surface of the enamel for a smoother look.

5. Porcelain Veneers

Sometimes a whitening treatment just won’t do. If you’re looking to completely overhaul the look of your smile, porcelain veneers are the best way to accomplish it. Veneers are a thin layer of porcelain that are custom made to lay on top of your existing tooth to transform the shape and color. Veneers are the perfect cosmetic option for fixing small gaps, and discolored or oddly shaped teeth.

Whatever your smile goals are, Dr. Ritzau and Dr. Livingston are here to help. Visit Shoreline Dental Studio in beautiful San Clemente, California for your comprehensive dental care.

Caring For Your Porcelain Veneers

porcelain-veneers-carePorcelain veneers are the perfect option for correcting many aesthetic imperfections with your smile. They can conceal discolored, chipped, or worn-down teeth, and can give you a beautifully uniform smile. Taking care of your veneers is just as important as taking care of your natural teeth, and will ensure long-lasting results. Maintaining Proper Oral Hygiene

Porcelain veneers are relatively durable, and should be maintained just as you would your natural teeth. Continue to brush and floss normally, and use non-abrasive toothpaste. Although the veneers are immune to cavities, the surfaces of the teeth that still show, and the surrounding teeth can succumb to tooth decay.

Avoiding Stains and Yellowing

One of the benefits of porcelain veneers is that they’re incredibly stain resistant, but not stain proof. It also means, however, that they’re also resistant to whitening treatments. Follow these tips for reducing discoloration:

  • Avoid smoking. Nicotine yellows porcelain veneers the same as it does with natural teeth. Smoking can yellow your new veneers in just a matter a months.
  • Limit your coffee and tea intake, and brush your teeth immediately after consumption.
  • Eat plenty of whole fruits and vegetables. Crunchy fruits and vegetables, like celery, are great at removing plaque from your teeth.

Preventing Chipping

If you have or develop bruxism, the tendency to grind your teeth at night, we can fit you with a mouth guard. Although the veneers are very durable, they are not as durable as your natural teeth. Avoid biting into hard objects that might chip your teeth, like pens, ice, or your nails. It’s also important to wear a mouth guard if you play contact sports to prevent damage.

In the event of chipping or breakage, it’s important to visit the dentist immediately. Sometimes small fractures can be repaired, but often the veneer will need replacement.

Get Regular Check Ups

It’s important to maintain regular dental visits for cleanings, and so we can assess and repair them if needed. Getting veneers is an irreversible cosmetic procedure, so it’s important to care for them properly. With proper care, they last between five and ten years before needing to be replaced.

If you’re interested in getting porcelain veneers, or if you’d like further care instruction, contact Shoreline Dental Studio in San Clemente, California.

smile-winterHave you had metal braces before? Don’t relive that metal mouth nightmare!  Invisalign aligners are clear and removable, letting you straighten your teeth without the hassle. From dinner parties to lunch dates, you won’t have to hide your smile while you’re transforming it. With the ease and flexibility of these aligners, you’ll be on a path to straighter teeth in no time.

Still want to take a massive bite into that apple or chew a Starburst from time to time? Because you remove your Invisalign aligners when you eat, there are no food restrictions like there are with traditional braces. This means you can still have your glass of wine, or your cup of morning coffee and still get the a healthy, straightened smile at the same time. The ability to remove the aligners also helps with maintaining proper dental hygiene. You won’t need a water pick to get in between metal crevices, because you can still brush and floss your teeth as you normally would.

Straightening your teeth also has lasting effects that go beyond just cosmetic appearance. Having straight teeth encourages better dental hygiene, as it eliminates crowded teeth that can make cleaning difficult. It can also fix problems with your bite, which can potentially lead to future dental problems.11086416514_7fa6dea4b7_m

Your treatment length will vary depending on your specific needs. However, a typical adult will normally wear Invisalign braces for about a year. For teens, Invisalign will take around the same amount of time that traditional braces would take. As a patient, you switch out your aligners on a 2 week basis that will gradually transform your smile.

We’ll put you at ease by assessing your bite, and mapping out a treatment plan customized to you! Holiday gift or New Year's resolution, a treatment with Invisalign can make a world of difference!

5 Tips to Get a Photo-Ready Smile

Shoreline_dental_team It’s that time of year again when friends and families come together, camera ready to document the festivities about to take place. Don’t be camera shy this year! We’ve come up with some tips to get your smile shining bright for all those holiday pictures.

1.Use a Whitening Toothpaste

Who doesn’t love their morning cup of coffee or a nice glass of red wine? Sometimes the things we love aren’t always best for a white smile. Incorporating a whitening toothpaste into your dental hygiene regimen can keep stains at bay. While not a permanent solution, whitening toothpaste can still act as a quick boost to protect your smile.

2. Use an Electric Toothbrush

Sometimes cleaning with a simple, manual toothbrush just isn’t enough. An electric toothbrush can help take away some human error. Our team uses Sonicare toothbrushes because they really help maintain clean, healthy teeth. With rotating heads and a stable pressure an electric toothbrush ensures each tooth is receiving the right amount of attention. Some devices even allow you to set a timer so you know you’re getting enough brushing time in. This is a great way to brighten your smile with a simple, everyday switch.

3. Wear the Right Lipstick

Wearing the right shade of lipstick can boost any smile! If you want your smile to look whiter, opt for shades that contain a blue hue. Red lipstick brings contrast that can help make your smile appear brighter. Putting on a glossy finish can also make teeth look shinier because of the light reflection.

4. Whiten Your Teeth

Knock friends and family out of their holiday socks with a white and bright smile to showcase in all those photos. Our team offers two types of whitening: in-office, or at-home treatment. We let you choose your teeth whitening preferences by giving you the best options.photo-ready-smiles

With our in-office treatment, we use Zoom! Advanced Whitening that works in just an hour! This is the perfect option if you’re looking to brighten your smile quickly before the holiday season.

The at-home treatment offers you a more gradual process and the luxury of whitening your teeth in the privacy of your own home. With a custom mold for your teeth, you can use the whitening solution daily and see results in about two weeks.

5. Get Veneers

When your smile is especially discolored, fractured, or worn down, porcelain veneers are a fantastic way to dramatically change your smile! At Shoreline Dental Studio, we are experts in creating custom made porcelain veneers that fit perfectly to your existing teeth. With two appointments over the course of two weeks, porcelain veneers can get your holiday smile picture perfect. Whether it’s getting your teeth whitened for those holiday photos, or getting a spiffed-up cleaning, your San Clemente dentist at Shoreline Dental Studios is here to help!

How Veneers Can Improve Your Smile

Do you smile with your mouth closed to hide your teeth? Don’t be ashamed of your smile. Even unsightly gaps, chips, and discoloration can be fixed with veneers. Dental veneers are thin shells of either porcelain or a composite resin material, which are bonded to the front of your teeth. Veneers are often used to change the size and shape of your teeth, mask discoloration, or to fix chipped, broken, or worn down teeth. Porcelain veneers are usually favored over the resin composite because they look more like natural teeth and are more resistant to stains.

What Happens During the Procedure?

It usually takes three appointments to complete the entire procedure. The first appointment entails diagnosis and treatment planning. Come to this appointment prepared to explain what problems you are trying to fix with veneers and what you want your new smile to look like. Voice your opinion, be specific, and bring examples to show Dr. Ritzau.

Your second appointment prepares your teeth for the veneers. Your teeth are lightly buffed to allow for the thickness of the veneer, and a local anesthetic may be used to numb the area.

For ceramic (porcelain) veneers, a mold is taken of your teeth and sent to a lab. After about one to two weeks, Dr. Ritzau will receive your custom-made veneers from the mold. If you’re uncomfortable with your smile after the buffing process you can request temporary veneers to wear while you wait for your new smile.

The third appointment consists of bonding. Dr. Ritzau will place the veneers on your teeth to confirm they are the right shape and color before permanently cementing them to your teeth. At this point the veneers can be trimmed or shaved to ensure a bright smile that matches your specifications. Your teeth will then be cleaned, polished, and etched in order to create a rough surface for the veneers to adhere to.

Once your teeth are ready for bonding, cement will be applied between your teeth and the veneers. A special light is then used to harden the cement. Dr. Ritzau will then remove any excess cement and evaluate your bite.

What Can You Expect After the Procedure?

Several weeks after the procedure, Dr. Ritzau will schedule a follow up appointment to assess how your gums are reacting to your new additions.

It is important to maintain good oral hygiene after getting veneers; however, there’s no other special care needed. Dr. Ritzau may recommend avoiding foods that could stain the veneers.

Because of the etching done to your teeth, veneers are permanent.  They can last between five and ten years before being replaced, however if small chips or cracks occur they can be repaired.

If you’re interested in dental veneers, or any other cosmetic dental procedure, schedule an appointment with Kristen Ritzau, DDS today!

Get Bridal Ready with Invisalign

Recently engaged? When planning for your walk down the aisle, don’t forget to plan for your smile makeover. Between pictures, seeing old friends, and staring into your partner’s eyes, you’ll be smiling so much on your wedding day that your cheeks will ache! You want to look your best on your wedding day, so use it as an opportunity to fix that narrow gap between your teeth, or the snaggle tooth that didn’t grow in right. Invisalignaligners are the clear alternative to braces, and will help you feel more confident during, and long after your wedding!

Some of the cases Invisalign can treat are:

invisalign-weddings

-       Gapped Teeth

-       Overbite

-       Underbite

-       Open Bite

-       Crowding

-       Crossbite

Kristen Ritzau, DDS will take x-rays, pictures, and impressions of your teeth to create a digital 3-D image and map out a treatment plan. Then Invisalign creates custom-made clear aligners that fit snugly over your teeth and steadily move them into position. You will wear each set for approximately 2 weeks before switching to a new set.

Invisalign treatment traditionally takes anywhere from 6 to 18 months, often taking less time than traditional braces. Starting your treatment early will allow you to finish treatment before your wedding day. Don’t let a short lead-time keep you from a beautiful smile. Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible, so you can still wear them on your big day!

There’s also no need to worry about diet restrictions. You can eat what you want with Invisalign aligners. Simply remove the aligners when eating, and put them back in after brushing.

Dental appointments for those with Invisalign are also less frequent than for people with traditional metal braces. You can visit Dr. Ritzau every four to six weeks to check in on your smile progress.

It is never too late to improve your smile, and with Invisalign aligners you can straighten your teeth without disrupting your pre-wedding activities. Wear your aligners to the bridal shower, engagement photos, and bachelorette party without added insecurities.

Take the first step towards a more confident smile by scheduling a consultation with Dr. Ritzau today!

Keep Your Breath Fresh for Your Valentine

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Lots of kissing happens in the month of love, and you don’t want to pass on a smooch because you’re worried about your bad breath. You want to keep your mouth kissable with good oral hygiene. While there are some cases when you’re bad breath may be emanating from your stomach, 80 percent of bad breath is actually caused by the millions of bacteria that live in your mouth. You actually have more bacteria in your mouth than you do cells in your body. Keep your halitosis at bay with these important oral health tips.

Maintain Good Oral Hygiene

Brush your teeth (AND TONGUE) twice daily using a toothpaste that contains fluoride. The grooves and ridges on your tongue can trap bacteria, which then excrete a bad odor.  It’s important to brush the entire surface of the tongue, even near your tonsils. Flossing at least once a day will get the hidden particles of food that can contribute to bad breath.

Drink More Water

Prevent dry mouth (xerostomia) by drinking plenty of water. Think about how you feel in the morning after sleeping all night with your mouth open. Gross! Staying hydrated will help. A quick rinse after a glass of red wine will also help keep your teeth white. Valentines-Smile

Visit the Dentist Regularly

Regular dental visits are important, too. Decaying teeth can give off a serious odor that no one loves. Regular cleanings will get rid of plaque and tartar below the gum line that you might not even realize is there, preventing decay and giving your mouth a thorough cleaning.

If you just can’t resist the complementary garlic rolls it’s ok to use a quick fix. Just make sure the gum you chew or the mint you suck on contains xylitol, which has actually been proven to reduce tooth decay. Also the mere act of chewing gum causes your mouth to produce extra saliva that washes away bacteria and food particles.

Keep these tips in mind and there wont be anything between you and your valentine’s kisses. Come to Kristen Ritzau’s office for a cleaning and checkup during the month of love![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

How to Know if Crowns or Fillings are Right For You

It's no surprise that many of us fear our visits to the dental office. According to the University of Washington's Dental Fear Research Clinic, 8% of Americans have anxiety towards going to the dentist. Whether it's a fear of dental tools, needles or the potential for pain, we're fearful and tend of avoid the chance of hearing any bad news in the dental chair. Cavities, in particular, are one of the most common diagnoses that can create stress for a patient. Fillings and crowns are recommended to take care of decay in the tooth, which are both simple procedures that can easily be pain free and extremely comfortable to experience. Cavities are treated with a filling or a crown, depending on the situation and the patient's tooth conditions. We've taken the guesswork out of crowns and fillings so you can be informed the next time you visit our clinic!

Fillings: First Line of Defense If cavities are a relatively new diagnosis for you, or if your cavity is quite small, a filling will typically be recommended. White fillings prevent the decay within the tooth from becoming more harmful and dangerous. This is a more affordable solution to cavities and can be a simple way to treat the condition with hardly any complications. A white filling is made out of a composite mixture of glass and plastic particles to match the tone of your tooth effortlessly. After a quick application and bonding of the filling in only one visit, your tooth is protected from future decay. Kristen-Ritzau-DDS-Crowns-Fillings

Crowns: Crafting a Healthy Smile At times, cavities can occur in a damaged or cracked tooth. In addition, cavities left without treatment will damage the tooth to a degree that white fillings will not support the health of the tooth. Crowns are shaped molds made to mimic the original tooth while shielding it from further damage. In just two visits, your tooth is reshaped to fit the crown and the crown itself is molded to be applied to your tooth. After this procedure, the tooth and the gum line are protected for 5 to 8 years.

Dr. Ritzau and her staff take great pride in ensuring that patients are treated well while preventing the chance of pain during any visit. In addition, our patients stay informed about their options and treatments when visiting, including the more complex and confusing aspects of dental health and care.
