With the school year back in full swing, now is the time to make great impressions and flash that brilliant smile of yours. Of course, in order to keep it brilliant you need to make sure to take care of your teeth. Even if you brush your teeth twice a day and floss, chances are there are a few ways you can improve your technique and really take your dental health to the next level. Here are a handful of tips on how you can improve and brush like a pro.

Brush Type

Unless your dentist tells you otherwise, it is always recommended to use a soft bristle brush. This is because medium or hard bristle brushes may damage the enamel of your teeth. Of course, there are specific reasons for the firmer bristled brushes, but without your dentist telling you specifically to go with these options, always go with soft. In terms of type or brand of brush, go with what is most comfortable. Electric brushes are fine, but you can still clean your mouth the same way with a manual option.

When and How Long

You need to brush at least two times a day. Optimal times are right after you eat breakfast and right before you go to bed. You can brush after lunch if you’d like as there’s nothing wrong with brushing more frequently. However, you don’t need to go crazy on the toothpaste (a pea sized amount is more than plenty). Whenever you brush, aim for two minutes. Most people fail to brush this long, but if you don’t, you won’t be cleaning all of your mouth.

How to Brush

You need to use both a circular motion and go up and down. Try to avoid brushing side to side though as this is just going to push bacteria and debris in between your teeth. You also want to avoid brushing too hard as this may damage the enamel on your teeth or even scratch your gums.

Don’t Forget Your Tongue

Have problems with bad breathe? It’s because you’re not spending time brushing your tongue. Bacteria can build up there that can cause bad breath, and cause oral health problems in the long term. So make sure your whole mouth is getting the full brushing experience.

Next Steps

By following these tips and making sure you brush your teeth at least twice a day (while also flossing), you’ll keep your brilliant smile, always have fresh breath, and boost your confidence, all at the same time. Just make sure to visit the dentist every six months for a checkup.
