FAQs: What Patients Often Ask About Sedation Dentistry

Can you eat before sedation dentistry?

Most patients are asked to avoid food and drinking for 6–8 hours before their sedation appointment. Your specific fasting instructions will depend on the type of oral sedation being used – always follow your dentist’s guidance.

No. After sedation dentistry, you won’t be able to drive. You’ll need someone to drive home and stay with you for several hours post-treatment.

The effects of oral sedation can last anywhere from 2 to 8 hours, depending on your dose and metabolism. You may feel drowsy or foggy for the rest of the day.

With dental sedation, most patients feel deeply relaxed or slightly sleepy. Some remember very little of the procedure afterward, which is part of why it’s so helpful for anxious patients.

You should not drive or make important decisions for at least 24 hours after your sedation appointment. Even if you feel okay, your reflexes and judgment may still be affected.

Focus on recovery. Rest in a quiet space, stay hydrated, and follow your aftercare instructions closely. Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and heavy meals until you’re fully alert.
