How to “Green” Up Your Dental Care

By March 23, 2016February 9th, 2024No Comments

With the demand for natural and organic products at an all-time high, we’ve been asked for tips on “green” dental care alternatives as well. Rather than over-the-counter tooth whitening products, teeth polishing scrubs, anti-cavity pastes, enamel-rebuilding rinses and other oral care products you may find in the dental care isle, consider remedies provided by Mother Earth herself between professional visits.
Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is one earth-friendly alternative that contains benefits for the entire mouth. It helps whiten the teeth while killing the bacterium that causes tooth decay. In fact, one of the most common methods used for healing with coconut extracts is called oil pulling, similar to using a mouthwash. Rinsing with this oil helps to rid toxins from teeth and gums while strengthening enamel, soothing inflamed gums and freshening bad breath. Harmful bacteria is trapped in the oil, and then dissolved away.

Bentonite Clay Powder

If you’re looking to polish up teeth, rid them of stains and help remineralize so enamel stays strong, consider bentonite clay. Pour one-fourth cup of clay into a glass along with a few drops of peppermint or cinnamon oil for flavor, two tablespoons of melted coconut oil, three teaspoons of baking soda and three tablespoons of distilled water. Next, combine the ingredients together until thick, for use as regular toothpaste.

Aloe Vera Juice

This plant serves as a temporary solution to irritated gums and bad breath. It contains anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and pain relieving medicinal properties, which may help to soothe oral sores. Gargle with the juice after scrubbing your teeth clean with an earth-friendly oral paste.

These items can usually be found at local whole food grocery and herbal shops. It’s important to note that symptoms like sore teeth, gums, and bad breath may be signs of larger oral complications, and should not be ignored. There is no substitute for your routine cleanings!
