National Gum Care Month

September is designated as the National Gum Care Month making it the perfect time to review smart teeth and gun care techniques. Many people often concentrate on taking care of their teeth but neglect their gums. Unfortunately, gingivitis, which is an early stage of gum disease, is difficult to recognize. That is why the National Gum Care Month is observed to educate people on how to take care of their mouth.

How to Take Care of Your Gums

Gum care includes flossing between your teeth daily; brushing the top, front, and back surfaces of your teeth; and gently brushing the gum tissues adjacent to your teeth, tongue, and cheeks. Your gums and teeth harbor bacterial plaque, which is a precursor to periodontal disease. Bacterial plaque is a colorless, soft, and sticky film that forms on your teeth and gums. If not removed, it causes an inflammatory response which impacts your mouth and body.

One of the first necessary steps to caring for your gums is recognizing all the warning signs of periodontal disease. Healthy gums are firm, light pink, and don’t bleed. Unhealthy gums are red, puffy, feel sore, and bleed while flossing or brushing. When left untreated periodontal disease leads to tooth loss.

You need to brush your gums every day irrespective of the irritation experienced. However, this should be done gently and in circular motions to remove all foreign debris and reduce infection. Flossing is also important because it removes foreign bodies from your teeth and mouth. It helps reduce bad breath, painful chewing, swollen gums, and any other gum-related disease.

Benefits of Seeing a Dentist

The benefits of making regular visits to your dentist cannot be stressed enough. This is because it gives you a better understanding of the state of your mouth and how to improve your oral health. Another benefit is that your dentist can arrest any signs of gum disease and treat it swiftly. If its been a while, make sure to to schedule a checkup.

Although September is the National Gum Care Month, you should observe oral health and hygiene all year round. If you experience signs of gingivitis or gum disease, make sure to visit your dentist to seek treatment. Moreover, schedule regular checkups to remain ahead of any potential issues. Take this chance to learn, implement, and instill good oral hygiene.
